Experience the Smashing Easter Party in Corfu
2019-03-21
2019-03-21

Visit our hotels in March, May-or April this Spring and be privileged to become part of the smashing Easter tradition on Corfu island; and when we say smashing, we mean it. Venetians and Orthodox customs blend at a most spectacular, loud and earth-shaking party. On the decks of this mixed-culture party, you will be more than happy to find the Local Philharmonic band performing live and marching the streets. Their renowned fame precedes them as they have a long standing tradition of rocking Easter Saturday with the Marcia Funebre from Beethoven and the Calde Lacrime by Michelli.

However, the real party beat is brought to you by the “botides”. Be prepared as they are here to make a mess. Here is their story going viral, attracting visitors from all over the world.

On the first Resurrection at 11am, the people of the island of Corfu throw out huge pots filled with water- called “botides” - from their balconies. The pots are clay jugs with a narrow opening and two handles on the side for transporting them. The balconies of the town are adorned with a colourful array of these “botides” that are decorated with red ribbons - red being one of the traditional colours of Corfu and of Orthodox Easter.

The custom of smashing pots in Corfu has a long history that is lost in the era of Venetian domination, but there are different theories about its origin. Since the ancient Twelve Gods and Christianity are interwoven in Greece, there are many theories which refer to these two religions. Some claim the “botides” custom is a Catholic one οriginating from the Venetian occupation days, where at the beginning of the year people threw their old things in order for the new year to bring them new and better ones. People of Corfu appropriated the custom, but replaced the ‘old things’ with the ceramic pots to cause more ruttle and noise. Another theory originates from the ancient Greeks, who, in April, celebrated the beginning of the agricultural and vegetation period, by throwing their old pots and replacing them with new ones, filling them with fresh fruits of the land. Some people from Corfu will surely tell you that whatever the truth is, the custom of throwing “botides” is a symbolic representation of exorcising evil by smashing the pots, which also means the end of winter dormancy period and the regeneration of Nature.

Make it so that you definitely get to visit Corfu during Easter, and you will undoubtedly experience the “botides” custom. Do not forget to take a piece of the smashed pots with you and keep it with you all year round - the locals will tell you that it will bring you good luck. When the bustle of the pots ends, the Philharmonics will march the streets playing joyous music this time - titled " Greeks Do not Be Afraid", not that they seem to be after all of that. Brace yourself for the tidal wave of Easter traditions and customs in Corfu, but be sure to retreat afterwards to a holiday haven of utmost relaxation and tranquility. Just leave everything to the “Memories Experts” of Mayor Hotels and experience the magic of Easter and Springtime in Corfu in the form of a smashing outdoor party.

Apart from this festive reason, there are other alluring reasons to visit Corfu. The water may be too chilly to swim yet, but there is plenty to do in Corfu Town which is absolutely charming, while the countryside landscapes are in full bloom, providing for some truly magnificent scenic views and activities within nature.
