Become part of the Fall festivities in Corfu!

Summer season may be retiring, but in Corfu, that doesn’t mean the party is over! The weather is still great as Greece’s climate is notoriously...Mediterranean and the Greeks do not miss a chance to prolong the summer feeling with open air fetes and feasts!

Panigiria pl. (πανηγύρια) as they are called in Greek, are open air fetes that are organised for various occasions. Typically held in celebration of the local saint of each area, they are also held on days of national and spiritual importance. They are an inherent part of the Greek culture and tradition, and if you have never experienced a Greek panigiri, you should rectify that as soon as possible.

It is one of the genuine local experiences: local people sit down next to strangers who become friends by the end of the night, on tables filled with local spirits and tasty delicacies, accompanied by traditional music, until kefi (κέφι // roughly translated to: excitement) reaches its zenith, by way of singing and dancing! These fetes usually take place in squares or the courtyards of churches.

Here are the upcoming festivities available for you to enjoy:

Panagia Mirtiotissa Festival - 24th September 16

Taking place very close to Mayor Pelekas Monastery, guests staying with us in September will have the chance to be part of this very local experience, easily and conveniently. Contact our 24h reception to find out how to secure a place!

Corfu Beer Festival 12th - 16th October 16

A fan of beer? And lager? Then be sure to check out the annual Corfu Beer Festival and taste something new perhaps?! Already on the roster for guest brewers we have four Italian breweries that have accepted the Corfiot beer challenge.

Agios Dimitrios Festival - 26th October 16

Taking place in the village of Ano Pavliana, which is built on the slopes of a mountain. It is located at approximately 20 minutes away from Pelekas village and it a nice opportunity for some landscape scenic exploration!

As you’ve probably figured out already, Greeks are looking for any excuse to celebrate...life, but October actually gives Greeks a very important reason to rejoice.

28th October is the National ‘Ohi’ (No) Day

A significant, annual national day that celebrates the most famous ‘no’ ever uttered in Greek politics. In 1940, Greek head of state Metaxas declined the ultimate of Italian dictator Mussolini, separating Greece from the fascist axis alliance that was building between Germany and Italy. During this day, shops, stores and business are generally closed in Greece but the cities, towns and villages are alive with morning military and student parades and processions throughout! If you are in Corfu around the Ohi day, you should visit Corfu old town so that you don’t miss the morning celebrations.

With so much going on, don’t miss the opportunity to visit our wonderful island of Corfu during the months of September and October: the mellow temperatures and the visual colour palette that begins to paint the start of an incredible autumn on Corfu’s landscapes makes visitors forget the summer's end blues! You will be able to fully recharge your batteries, while also blowing off some steam in an idyllic setting that is never off season.
